With the approval of a set of planning and information gathering actions, financing began to implement Phase II of the Joint Declaration of Intent (JIU) to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+), signed by our country with the governments of Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom and USAID (as an observer).<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For this purpose, we have USD 10 million to promote sustainable development in the areas of intervention, mainly in our Amazon region.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The start-up program, approved at the first ordinary session of the Board of Directors chaired by the Ministry of the Environment (Minam), includes the formation of the technical team until the execution of the prioritized actions of the Implementation Plan for Phase 2 of the Updated ICD 2021-2025, which will be executed over three years.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The meeting was held with the participation of the Ministries of Environment, Culture and Economy and Finance, as well as representatives of the Norwegian Embassy in Peru, the Amazonian regional governments, Serfor and indigenous peoples.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The initial team will be responsible for gathering information in the territory and developing long-term management documents. To this end, it will coordinate with regional governments and indigenous organizations, with whom priority activities will be identified at the local level, within the framework of land titling.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In this regard, the Vice-Minister of Strategic Development of Natural Resources of Minam, Nancy Chauca, highlighted the importance of starting work on this matter. \u201cIt is crucial to take quick action to have the necessary tools and promote the implementation of this process,\u201d she said, in her capacity as president of the Implementation Board.<\/span><\/p>\n

Omar Corilloclla, Profonanpe\u2019s Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, explained that the Start-up Plan will last 5 months, during which time management documents will be prepared and will culminate with the approval of the Global Operational Plan and an Annual Operational Plan, which will serve to define the course of action.<\/span><\/p>\n

In turn, the executive director of Serfor, Luis Alberto Gonz\u00e1les-Z\u00fa\u00f1iga, pointed out that the objective of the JIU is to combat deforestation and forest degradation. \u201cTo achieve this, it is necessary to establish fundamental priorities that will allow the allocation of resources to be implemented through regional governments, indigenous organizations and social organizations,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

About the Joint Statement of Intent<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In 2014, Peru signed a cooperation agreement with Norway and Germany, called the Joint Statement of Intent (JIU), which was expanded in 2021 to include the United Kingdom and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the latter as an observer.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This agreement seeks to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in our country, which are produced as a result of deforestation and degradation of the Amazon forests.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At COP 27, a contribution agreement was signed between Peru, Norway and Profonanpe for the management of USD 10 million to finance the actions of the \u201cImplementation Plan for Phase 2 of the ICD Update 2021-2025\u201d, which has a total cost of approximately USD 50 million.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
